About Maker Faire:

"Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly
showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning.

Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers. They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community.

The original Maker Faire event was held in San Mateo, CA and in 2012 celebrated its seventh annual show with some 800 makers and 110,000 people in attendance. World Maker Faire New York, the other flagship event, has grown in three years to 500+ makers and 55,000 attendees. Detroit, Kansas City, Newcastle (UK), and Tokyo are the home of “featured” Maker Faires (200+ makers), and community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires are now being produced around the United States and the world—including right here in London. "

Institute of Making

Makers are on a rise! The culture that manifested itself in the wilderness of the Nevada dessert has finally made it to main-stream of London. And today UCL opened its Maker-space: the Institute of Making. Beautifully designed utilitarian space for makers was crowded and full with exited grown-ups. I played with an odd gum-like material that turns stiff on impact, saw world's lightest smoky material of silica aerogels, and I peered at the world of tiny with a portable ProScope microscope, and found out that London will finally have a Makers Fair this summer. Personally can hardly wait till they begin their series of workshop.

Experiments with relief and heraldic lions

20/1/2013

Heraldry is perhaps one of the oddest quirks of history that is still alive and well in Britain. It is full of pomp and deep multi-layered messages, and often represented by the strangest creatures. A visit into a stately St George's Hall at Windsor castle or pulpits of Westminster Abbey are is enough to make one wonder if the goofy fairytale beasts around truly have any of proud historical importance or if they constitute a practical joke for visitors.

Makes for an interesting investigation, particularly perfect when looking for a subject matter for samples. Being a fresh British subject, I started with the three exceptionally
virile Passant Guardant lions that have been part of the Royal Arms of England more or less since Richard the Lionheart used them in 1198 on his Great Seal of England.  I had to figure out what the Lion Passant in the description stood for, and once I found transcriptions for the different lion poses and attitudes in Wikipedia, I frankly could not stop. I work in different techniques, and was always wondering how they would compare to each other as a low relief/ surface decoration on a similar subjects. So far, I am about halfway through working with the different lion attitudes and techniques, and I imagine there will be an update to this blog post. But I though to share these amusing results. And yes. As some of you might expect, I have some special plans for the Lion Dormant!
